Lights, Camera, Economics: Independent Film in the UK
Short documentary about Alma Economics research on the UK independent film sector, commissioned by the British Film Institute. Official selection at Edinburgh Short Film Festival and HB Film Festival.
This short documentary was produced to disseminate insights from the BFI-commissioned “Economic Review of UK Independent Film,” a landmark report examining the economic challenges and value of the UK’s independent filmmaking sector. The objective was to translate the report’s findings into a compelling visual narrative that could reach audiences beyond the usual readership of economic research.
As Project Manager, responsibilities included developing the concept, writing the script, providing voice-over narration, and overseeing the edit. The film combined interviews with filmmakers and industry professionals with data visualisation and archival footage to tell the story of how independent cinema contributes to the UK economy and the challenges it faces.
The documentary was selected and screened by both the Edinburgh Short Film Festival and the HB Film Festival, validating the quality of the production and the effectiveness of the research-to-film communication approach. The project demonstrated that economic research can be transformed into engaging cultural content that stands on its own merits.
